The Fishermen and their families in Kampot belong to the Muslim community in Cambodia, generally known as “Cham”. They are descended from refugees from the ancient Kingdom of Champa who fled central Vietnam 500 years ago.
Today the Kingdom of Cambodia is home to approximately 300,000 Muslims. Many Cambodia's Cham live in poverty and have lower education levels, higher illiteracy rates, and poorer health indicators than the majority of the Cambodian population. Most Cham live in rural areas, where they are primarily engaged in fishing and farming.
